This holiday runs from saturday to saturday and will include:

Meals are not included.  The Villa has cooking facilities and the nearest supermarket is several minutes walk away.  There are some excellent local restaurants serving very reasonably priced meals.  Some are an easy walk from the Villa and on occasions we will provide evening transfers to try other restaurants in the region.

(both easier and harder programmes)

Arrival Saturday. Included group transfer from Carcasson or Perpignan airport. Click here for details and also for information on arriving from Barcelona airport.

We leave the villa on foot and within a few  minutes we are in the Montgri Nature Reserve,  much looking forward to exploring  its green hills and wild, rugged coastline.   Via a craggy traverse, with  sweeping  views of the Bay of Roses to the north and the Bay of Pals to the south, we reach the “Roca Maura” peak which dominates all around and gives the town of L'Estartit its “Gibralta” aspect.   By lunch time we have descended to the harbour of Estartit. Those opting for an "easier" day can enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Perhaps a boat ride round the Medes Islands or a swim in the sea. On the "harder" itinerary we climb to the Cap de La Barra from where a rocky trail descends to the Calella cove. We explore a section of the "Route of the Wind" on our return to the villa.

Monday “THE PYRENEES AND THE GR10”  A dramatic transformation in scenery  as a fifty minute drive finds us right in the heart of the eastern flank of the Pyrenees.   Our climb from the Banyuls Pass (591 metres) traces the French / Spanish borderline.  Passing lush meadows with grazing cattle, our hike joins the GR10, the mighty trail that crosses the entire length of the Pyrenees. taking us into France high on the summits of the wild Alberes mountains.  From this vantage point we look across towards Spain over the vast Emporda plain and the bay of Roses, and towards France as far as the coastal resort of St Laurent, Perpignan and the mighty Canigou mountain. Those opting for the "easier" itinerary can stroll and relax beside the Sallford Mountain while the "strenuous" walk continues on the GR10 and to the Col de la Crbasserra from where we climb to the summit of the Puig de les Guardes (1001 metres). We then double back to the Sallford peak from where we descend back down to the Banyuls Pass and are driven back to the villa.

Another region of unspoilt bays and coves is accessed from the  sleepy resort of Tamariu,  just half an hour’s drive away.   Sometimes on the GR95 and on occasions detouring, using our local knowledge to find the most spectacular scenery, we reach the beautiful resorts of  Llafranc and Calella around lunch time. Those wishing for an "easier" day can now relax on the beach at Callela or visit the nearby Cap Roig Botanical Gardens. The "strenuous" hike climbs then twists down to explore the rugged coast line of the Cap Roig Nature Reserve. We pass the Iberian remains at Castell and then continue to the sleepy resort of La Fosca. A 35 minute drive brings us back to the villa.

Wednesday  “DAY OFF”. Enjoy a boat ride around the Medes Islands or take a bus to visit the old town of Girona or the Dali museum in Figueres.  Perhaps a walk or a bike ride, golf, diving, swimming, sailing, kayaking. The list is endless.  Or simply relax by the villa pool.  You’ve earned a rest.

A few minutes walk from the villa and once again we are in the Montgri  Nature Reserve. We follow the GR92 to the high ground above the cliffs that drop steeply down to the first Marine Nature Reserve in Europe. We marvel at the view across to the Bay of Roses and to the  final ridge of the Pyrenees as it disappears  into the Mediterranean Sea.. The "easier" option passes directly across to the resort of L'Escala for a relaxing afternoon of swimming and exploring the resort of L'Escala. Perhaps a visit to the Greek and Roman remains at Empurias. The "strenuous" hike climbs steeply down to discover a series of dramatic remote coves and then joins the GR92 along the rugged cliff side coastline to the Montgri bay. A15 minute drive brings us back to the villa.

On the "harder" itinerary we hike from the villa back into the Montgri  Nature Reserve. We climb to Las Dunas, a ridge of high sand dunes stabilized by pine forest hundreds of years ago. From there we climb on the GR92 trail to the Mont Pla summit (311 metres) to enjoy a 360 degree panorama across the Emporda Plain to the Pyrenees along with the 2900 metre summit of the Canigou far away in France. We traverse the hillside and descend into a secluded valley to the Monastery of Santa Caterina.    We climb to the impressive Montgri Castle, a fantastic feat of medieval architecture ,and then descend down to the medieval royal town of Torroella de Montgri. Here the easier itinerary joins the walk passing through the Torroella old town then following the Ter river to its estuary. We stroll along one of Europe's finest beaches with views of the Montgri hills and the Medes Islands returning on foot to the villa.
